  • Hi!

Today's lesson is written by Youssef.

    You first had a TEST

Then we resumed our work on the back cover of the book UGLIES.

Finally we did an exercice about description.

    Here is what we said:

The picture suggests that the girl on the cover is considered by the community as an ugly person.(Actually she may look normal).

Thus, she tries to hide her face because she is ashamed of being normal.

The back cover explains that the main character Tally is about to experience her plastic surgegy which happens at 16 in this world.

Indead, ugly persons have to do it if they want to reach happenese.

Some of you thought it was a superficial / shallow society as it doesn't care about the person's identities.

    HW:

You must tidy your binder + finish the exercice.

  • Hi folks!

Today's lesson is written by Pauline B.

We first corrected the exercice about inference. Here is the correction:

    Nature:
Right hand side --> Front cover of a book.
Left hand side --> Back cover of a book.

    Description of the front cover:
The picture represents the close up of a girl's face.
Actually we can only see half of it. She looks beautiful/pretty/gorgeous with her clear eyes. It seems that she has a fringe.
On the right we can see something that looks like a tree or a veil behind which she seems to be hiding/concealing her face.
In the foreground we can read the title UGLIES written in capital letters. Moreover we can read the name of the author: Scott Westerfeld.
At the top, a text indicates that the novel a bestseller.   At the bottom we can read the catchphrase saying "In a world of extreme beauty, anyone normal is ugly."
The aim of a catchphrase is to attract the public's attention.
It is supposed to make you want to read the book.

Then I gave you the following document:

Here is what we said about it:

Today's lesson is written by Aminata.

Today you first had a test about the video dealing with Pink Lady

Then we recaped your ideas related to the following question: Following trends - a need to fit in?

    Here is what you said:

Yes: -don't know how to develop, their own personality
they adopt to be accepted by a group

    -human=sociable: want to be a part of group=powerful vs alone= weak/powerless
-a need to show similitudes/friendship's links or bonds

Then I gave you the following comments from a forum. You had to highlight the reasons and the examples given by each character. Here is what we said:

Test Pink Lady + forum comments

You then had to reformulate the various reasons given by the internet users. Here is what you said:

    Text:
    legend: reasons, examples

Teens follow trends for different reasons:

    - because they are influenced by the media they want to look like their favourite singer
    - because they think it will help them to feel more confident if they belong to  group

Today's lesson is written by Youssef.

    We watched the following video:

    Here is what we said:

This is the trailer of the movie the Devil wears Prada with Meryl streep and Anne Hattaway. The main character has managed to get a job in famous fashion magazine. Her job consists in assisting her boss: she is a personal assistant. She will have to cope with different issues because of her appearance and style. For her new colleagues she looks sad and out. Actually she is just a simple/normal girl living a happy relation with her boyfriend.

In order to be accepted by the magazine staff, she will try to be trendy, fashionable.

                    belong to the magazine staff,

Not only will her clothes change, but her attitude and identity will too.

She will be obsessed by her job and will even forget her boyfriend's birthday.

Her boyfriend doesn't like her new attitude .

The moral could be : don't forget who you are and where you come from.

    To wear: porter (des vêtements)

    To consist in+v-ing: consister à

    To cope with=To deal with

  • Hi folks!

Today's lesson is written by Chris.

We recaped the different styles studied in class.

Then we tried to talk about the reasons people have to adopt a style. here is what we said:

the reasons people have to adopt a style

_Perhaps they adopt the style they want to be different from the other groups.
To stand out from the other groups.
_They want to belong to a group
to be a part of a group
_ Perhaps they adopt the style of their favorite singer/artist
_You may be influenced by your friends or relatives
_You may be influenced by your  job or forced to adopt a certain style

Then we watched the following video:

You had to mention the nature + answer Wh-?

    You collected information in groups.

Then you had to focus on detailed comprehension, finding the following information:

    - what people think of the Pink Lady's style

    - What she thinks of her own style

    - Explain what, in the Pink Lady's opinion, is the most important thing when you consider a style.

    Homework:

You must finish the work began in class and be ready to present your findings to the class next time.

This is the trailer of the movie Big Fish by Tim Burton with the really famous Ewan McGreger. It seems to be a fantastic movie.
It deals with the relation of a dying father and his son. The son tells the stay of his father the way he told him.
The problem for him is that it's difficult to separate facts from fiction, the man from the mythe. Indeed, the son doesn't know his father and sounds frustrated as he doesn't believe in what his father told him.
The father didn't really lie to him but he transformed/ oversized/ exaggerated his own story so as to make it more interesting or to make his son proud of him.
The film is a symbolic of life. M. Brot is crazy about the film as it echoes his own private life. He thinks it's a heartwarming and really moving film. He can't help crying at the end/ shedding a tear.
     Vocabulary:
    Can't help + V.ing = ne pas pouvoir s'empecher de..
To be cautioned = to be warned
To prevent from = empecher de..

At first sight the video looks like an advert for beauty/cosmetic cream such as l'orealactually, it is a spoof ad/a fake ad denouncing/criticizing  the world fashion. The product is not a cream but a software called fotoshop by adobé.Instead of vising make-up, using surgery or even working out, the ladies in fashion magazines are  transformed thanks to the software. The spoof  uses irony to criticize the influence  these magazine have people. Indeed  the model don't look real anymore but they look like plastic, without any defect and they even look lean/skinny.The message could be that the beauty of magazines is fake  and dangerous because you can't prevent from having wrinkles.

    lean/skinny : maigre

     the lesson was :

"in" refers to the fact that you are a part of a group, a member of a clique and you wear the same type of clothes, you listen the same  way. You fit in a group you follow the fashion/trend movement.
On the other hand "out" means  you are not a member of a group. You stand out because you are different. You are excluded, you don't follow the rules.
